The Tiny Human has been exclusively breastfeed since he was born. Even through all the bouts of mastitis and the trip into hospital, he only had breast milk which is apparently some kind of feat. Recently we started the tiny one on food, mashed potato's for a couple of days and now we are trying out pear & banana rice cereal, which he is absolutely loving.
At the moment we're mixing the Tiny Human food with breast milk, which has been fine. However the other night the Bearded One suggested we get formula sachets to try mixing the food...
a) to see if the Tiny Human likes formula without the expense of purchasing a big tin that he may not like and...
b) so there is less pressure on me to have to express enough to mix with his food on big feed days.
I informed the Beard One that sachets are currently unavailable due to (so I had read somewhere) the 1080 Formula scare. He thought this was a bit ridiculous, but it prompted me to look into the rumors. For those who have never looked at the price of formula while at the supermarket, it ranges from $17.50 - $43.99; quite an expense if your tiny person doesn't like the particular tin you buy.
I contacted both Karicare and Nurture and asked if there was any truth to the sachet rumors.
Nutricia (makers of Karicare) sachet production is temporarily on hold as they are moving the factory to the different facility. They also provided what seemed to be standard blurb responsible marketing for breast milk replacements.
Nurture said that they have had changes in manufacturing & the manufacturer isn't producing sachets at the moment (as opposed to the 1080 scare). They are hoping they will start producing the sachets again as they “understand the position consumers are in regarding purchasing a whole can”.
Nurture also said that “feedback from consumers like you have given is very helpful”, meaning it could be useful to drop them some feedback that you too have been looking for sachets. The more feedback they receive, the more likely it will be that we see the sachets returned to shelves. It may not be straight away and it probably isn't going to be in time for when you need them, but it will help out soon to be new mums down the line.
So if you have been looking for formula sachets so you can see wether your little one will drink without breaking the bank on a whole tin, this is why they aren't currently available. Mystery solved.
