The Tiny Human has been eating solids for a few weeks now; as he's not quite 6 months, we're taking it slow and letting him lead the way. I've never pictured myself as a person that would buy baby food from the supermarket; I've always felt that it's easy enough to make yourself, so why not.
The addition of food prepping for the tiny tummy meant a trip to the big red shed (The Warehouse) in search for things to aid the food journey.
If you're a Pinterest person, you have probably had many a scroll though the 'Kids & Parenting' section and have seen the idea of freezing your homemade baby food in ice cube trays (example). Now this is a brilliant idea, nothing new but still brilliant. However if you've tried to get ice from a tray and resorted to smashing the shit out of the kitchen bench to get that sucker out, you'll know how much noise those trays can make; which probably isn't something you want to do if you just got your wee one to sleep.
Thankfully we're no longer in the stone age and you can get silicone trays; no more smashing the tray to bits, just pop the contents out.
While at The Warehouse I picked up a couple of Living & Co Silicone Citrus Ice Trays for $2.00 each; an absolute bargain, considering I almost walked out with slightly more expensive mini muffin trays. I've found these trays to be the perfect size for introducing foods to the Tiny Human and at the moment in our freezer you will find bags of mashed carrot, potato, pumpkin and pear, all made using these trays.
The great thing about having small frozen cubes (well circles) is that not only can you increase meal size easily but you can mix up the flavors to give your tiny person variety (eg. a circle of carrot & circle of potato, as pictured above). Best of all no ice tray banging.
So far the Tiny Human has been introduced to: potato, kumara, pumpkin, carrot, banana, avocado, rice cereal and salmon.
